Chandrabose passed away

Popular music director and a famous face in the Kollywood circle, Mr. Chandrabose passed away on Thursday, September 30, 2010 around 10:30 AM, at the Government Hospital in Chennai. Mr. Chandrabose (55) was suffering from liver and kidney problems for the past couple of months and was admitted to a private hospital in Purasawakkam. He was discharged, upon request, and admitted to the GH where he went into a state of coma before breathing his last.

Mr. Chandrabose has performed a lot of stage shows and dramas before getting a break into cinema through his drama 'Kasi Yathirai' in the 1970s. Also a lyricist, his work as a music director and lyricist in Mangudi Minor earned appreciation from former Chief Minister MGR. He also started the Bose and Deva music troop and had performed in numerous light music shows across the state. He has scored music for hundreds of movies including Manithan, Raja Chinna Roja and Paati Sollai Thattadhey.

Mr. Chandrabose is survived by his two wives Rajeshwari, and their son Santhosh and daughter Gowri, and Geetha and their son Vinoth.

Gloria Stuart, the Oscar-nominated actress who played an elderly survivor in the film ‘Titanic’, has died at the age of 100. Gloria died on Sunday at her Los Angeles home. 11,000 private schools to go on strike

In the aftermath of the damage caused to the private school in Pochampalli, private schools across the state have decided to go on strike.A private school in Pochampalli was torched and two buses, a car and computers worth Rs. 3 crore were damaged on Monday. The bizarre incident happened when Suresh, a Class XI student, died after he was hit by the school bus. He was allegedly sent home for non-payment of fees. This made the locals angry and they ransacked the school.Following this, private and matriculation schools in Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri districts remained closed on Wednesday. Eight people have been arrested with regard to the case and police are in search of three more offenders who are absconding.The issue took bigger proportions on Wednesday when a committee, consisting of authorities from private and matriculation schools met. It was decided in the meeting that nearly 11,000 private schools across the state will participate in a one-day strike on the 17th of this month. This will affect all operations and studies of lakhs of school students.The strike has been called to initiate prompt action against offenders in the Pochampalli incident and to transfer the case to the CB-CID department. Renovation is currently being undertaken at the Pochampalli School and the management has informed that the school will re-open on Monday next week.

1000 UK visa applicants rejected

As many as a thousand UK visa applicants have been turned away by the UK mission here and face a 10-year ban on travel to Britain for presenting false documents in the past nine months. A few among them have even landed in jail. One among them is cook Chandran of Kumbakonam, who was arrested on Friday, seeking a tier-1 visa (highly skilled migrant) with fake experience papers. Police said that Chandran (48), had applied for UK visa and claimed that he had worked in a star hotel in Egmore for a few years. During the interview he had said that he wanted to fly to Britain for a job in a hotel. On verification, Chandran’s ‘experience certificate’ was found to be a fake. The UK Border Agency (UKBA) officials, based at the mission, immediately stepped in and alerted the city police. A senior police officer said Chandran was arrested by the city police even as he was hoping to get his passport stamped with the British visa.Almost 1,000 visa applicants have had their visa applications refused by the UKBA in Chennai in the first nine months this year and face a 10-year ban on travel to the UK because they presented false documents”, said UKBA entry clearance manager Ms. Gemma Dodgson.

Mother, paramour kill child

A 27 year old woman and her paramour were arrested at Annamalai Nagar on Thursday for the murder of her two-year-old son. Inbanila, a widow of Vengalam village, near Thirukkovilur in Villupuram district, had an illicit affair with Chandru alias Balachandar (35), a mason of Kundalapadi police said.

Police said, “Inbanila took her child Tamilselvan, to meet Balachander on Wednesday to a desolate place near Chidambaram”. “When they were together in a secluded spot, Tamilselvan, who was lying nearby, started crying. Balachandar angrily kicked the child to death in a fit of rage.”

“But Inbanila lodged a complaint at Annamalai Nagar police station stating that two unidentified men attempted to molest her when she was on her way to meet a friend at Vallam Padugai”. “When I tried to resist, she claimed, the strangers killed her son by smashing his head against the ground.”

Cubs get Tamil names from CM

A rare species of white tiger which gave birth to three cubs have been given Tamil names by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday.The White tiger and Tigress were brought to Vandalur from the National Zoological Park from New Delhi in 2006. The tiger is called Bhismar and the tigress is called Anu. The pair gave birth to three cubs in June this year. That was the second time Anu gave birth to 3 cubs. Since the cubs take some time to get acclimatized to the weather and climatic conditions, they were kept in a very quiet place all these days.Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Friday named these cubs Sembian, Indira and Valli. The male cub has been named Sembian, which is in remembrance of Chozha Kings. The female cubs have been named Indira and Valli, in remembrance if Indira Gandhi and Thillaiadi Valliammai.The Zoo authorities have taken pain-staking efforts to help provide a suitable environment to the white tigers, which are 15 in number now. People were not allowed to see the Tigress during her pregnancy period.

Background of Anna University student’s suicide

A fact-finding team belonging to the Arunthathiyar Human Rights Forum (AHRF) on Wednesday claimed that M. Jothi, a first year engineering student from the Arunthathiyar community who committed suicide at her village a few days ago, was forced to take the extreme step due to ill-treatment meted out to her on the college campus.The four member AHRF team visited Jothi’s village Mullukurichi near Namagiripettai in Namakkal on Monday and conducted an inquiry into the events which led to Jothi’s suicide. It became clear that the student was ill treated at the Anna University due to the community which she belonged to and also her class mates ragging her the team said after speaking to 200 families.Two weeks prior to committing suicide, Jothi had been calling her father Mathavan, a driver, and brother Deepak and informing them about the ill-treatment meted to her”, the findings revealed. Jothi was very desperate and contacted her neighbor who helped her to continue education, and informed her about sufferings said Kumar one of the team member. Jothi did not want to visit her village initially. But as he could not tolerate the humiliation she was forced to come home to meet her family.

Jothi’s brother Deepak said, ever since she returned home, she was in a state of trauma and continued weeping the whole day. Kumar said immediate action was sought against those students who drove Jothi to take the extreme step and the report must be forwarded to the Namakkal district Collector.
